Coins like these have many names, but our favorite is smashed pennies, aka elongated pennies and pressed pennies. The first elongated penny was created for the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus during 1892-1893. There are some who believe that there were such coins produced earlier, but the experts have singled this celebration as the beginning.
A smashed penny is is made by forcing a penny (or other coin) through two steel rollers. There is an engraving on one of the rollers (sometimes both sides). A crank (mechanical or electronic) forces the coin through the rollers and squeezes it with extreme pressure. This smashes the coin from round to ...you guessed it...elongated. The pressure pushes the engraving into the penny at the same time it is smashing it.
We've been collecting these since we were children, and now our grandchildren collect them, too. Made from shiny pre-1983 pennies, there is a higher copper content than if created with today's pennies.
While there are not sixpence coins in the US, we do have pennies and this one reads:

There are wedding rings, a heart and some lovely love birds impressed into the penny, too!
Because they are smashed in the process of impressing the message, these souvenir pennies are super thin, yet sturdy. The new oval shape measures about 1-5/16 long and about 13/16 wide. This makes a wonderful keepsake for your wallet or pocket. And, it's a lovely little token to give to your beloved.

THE WONDER OF IT ALL Pocket Token
At a carnival in the 1950s, I made one of these wonderful tokens on a very special mechanical device. After thinking for what seemed to be ages of just the right sentiment, I impressed my name.
I fell in love with mechanical - non computerized - machines and treasure every old fashioned one I find. Although we don't have our own impression machine, our buddy, Tom, does and he made this wonderful token for us:

These machines are no longer manufactured, but you can find them few and far between at old-time amusement parks and other special places.
Each token is made one-at-a-time - and - get this - Tom has to impress one-character-at-a-time! Amazing!
We think these as wonderful wedding souvenir. Add a simple ball chain key chain or necklace to compliment that old-fashioned feeling.

This tiny box (measuring just 3 inches by 1-3/4 inch by 1 inch) holds on display an Muertos couple dressed for their wedding. They are eternally together in the box coffin. The little bride and groom barely measure 2 inches high and are fully fashioned and permanently set in their coffin.
Just like all of our other Day of the Dead Figurines and vignettes, each of our Amor Eterno Boxes is hand made and hand painted, so please allow for some variation.

Our friend from Ojinaga created this wonderful framed picture. The drawing is an original based on the famous Posada drawings that illustrated the Days of the Dead so marvelously. The drawing is in black, whites and greys, but lends itself to be highlighted with color if you chose.
The deep red frame is accented in metallic gold and measures 8-1/2 inches high (including the concha trim) by 6-5/8 inches wide and is 1 inch deep. The concha (curved part on top) measures about 1-1/4 inch high by 4-3/8 inches wide. All of these measurements are approximate as each is hand made from recycled Mexican fruit crates (rejas) and occasionally, of new wood.
The center of the concha features a small calaca, or Day of the Dead Skull fashioned from dental plaster, as the artist's wife is a dentist!
Of course, you can replace the picture with our own, or add some mementos to it and further embellish the frame. You might even choose to paint the image. Please be careful adding color - we're not sure if the black lines will bleed. Please make a test on the back before you try.

Once used as portable shrines or altars, retablos are colorfully painted and hold painted, plaster figures representing something special in the holder's life.
This little matchbox shrine features a Bride and Groom holding hands. These are quite special as they are a mini Day of the Dead Couple. This little work of art has been painstakingly crafted from a matchbox as well as a bit of plaster (usually made of potato starch and gypsum). It has been and traditionally painted in finely detailed vibrant colors.
Please allow for variation in painting and in the couple, as each of these little retablos is handmade, and measures approximately 3 inches high by by 1-3/4 inch wide when the doors are closed. When the doors are open, the width is about 3-1/4 inches.

The candelabra is crafted for standard tapers, but traditional beeswax candles will be lovely in it as well. (You might have to shave or re-shape the candles a bit, depending on the type you use). We think it is quite attractive with no candles at all!

Hand Made Flying Heart Tin Ornament
Our striking tin ornament is cut by hand in Mexico and then hand embossed and painted. Technically, it is a Christmas ornament, but we think it is perfect for anytime. Each is different (but the painting and design are similar) as the ornaments are wrought by artisans who treasure the artistry of generations of Mexican craftsmen. The ornaments are about 6-1/2 inches wide, but, because they are handmade, they will vary somewhat in size.

Handmade Amulet for Luck and Love

This large Mexican packet amulet is decorated with so very many meaningful items that it is hard to describe! The centerpiece is a herradura (magnetic horseshoe) wrapped with colorful rayon thread. Round, flower and leaf sequins are spread throughout. The horseshoe faces downward in the middle of the red paper covered heart. It frames a holy picture of San Martin Caballero the patron of luck and money. Wooden crosses are at each of the top corners.
This special amulet also contains wheat stalks, golden threads and seeds. The small packet covered in velvet usually contains wheat seeds or grain, representing gold dust - or, seeds of the Job's tears plant for protection.
Each of these 6-inch high amulets is basically the same, but, of course, because they are each hand-made, you can rest assured that each is also unique, and the maker affixes a special stamped paper on the back with spiritual images specific to that maker. The entire piece is covered with vinyl film and arrives with a hanging string.
This makes a lovely engagement or wedding gift, offering protection for the new couple. Of course, we cannot promise that it does have powers, but oftentimes, belief is what is most powerful.

Sixpence Coin - for Luck and Good Wishes
Long associated with a bride's good fortune, the sixpence is a coin of the British Empire. It was introduced in 1551 to represent 6 pennies. The last of the sixpence coins was produced in 1967.
Superstition was widespread in Medieval times. Almost every part of life was controlled by evil spirits, that needed to be assuaged. Talismans and tokens, including lucky coins, were the most popular of the amulets in use. Because they especially felt the presence of the spirits during ceremonies, many of these traditions have continued today.
Traditionally a gift of silver was made from the groom to the bride, and a sixpence (then totally made of silver), came to represent this token - and was usually included as a part of the bride's dowry - now making the gift from bride to groom!
The sixpence is now a symbol of good luck for any occasion, but especially for a wedding:

Start a new tradition in your family and use the same coin for your daughter's (or daughter-in-law's) slipper as you wore in your wedding!

This delightful oversized booklet was originally printed around 1880. It has been reproduced in such a charming format: together with an envelope and pink ribbon hand-tied about the spine. Though social etiquette has changed over the years the principles of successful relationships remain the same today. The language of flowers is also covered, a much neglected subject. Each paper booklet measures 19 by 13 centimeters; the envelope, 16.2 by 21.5 centimeters.

Robert Doisneau is celebrated as one of France's most outstanding photographers. His black and white photos are at once modest and meaningful. Such a beautifully illustrated parlor game of simpler times is a welcome relief from the overly violent electronic games of today. The gentle games of the past were designed to stimulate the mind and improve memory and math skills.
The Wedding Game was originally published in 1880. This charming card game chronicles a Bride and Groom's trip to the altar. As in any wedding, players pay and receive according to directions, along the way finding bridesmaids, groomsmen, the Parson and a clerk - all the while avoiding the Lawyer, the Bride's Aunt and a rejected suitor.
If the Lawyer is encountered during the game, the wedding is postponed! It seems that very little has changed in the last century or so!
The game comes in a beautiful slipcase box that is embellished with hand-applied iridescent glitter and tied with a satin ribbon bow. The 3-1/2 by 4-3/4 inch cards are produced in a style evocative of pastel lithographs of their original day. There are 24 character cards, charmingly illustrated and 25 pay cards.
