Our festive Balloon Vendor Muerto is hand sculpted made of papier mâché and then hand painted with bright acrylic paints to create his party demeanor. His mustachioed face is more debonair than most Muertos!

Created by traditional artisan Sergio Martinez with a bit of a modern flair, this fellow stands tall at 4 inches. His balloons add another 2 inches. From side to side at the widest point, he measures about 3-1/4 inches.

His apron and other clothing may vary in color, as will his balloons. Because he is hand sculpted, his size may vary ever so slightly as well. So, please let us choose one for you.

This reproduction of an antique scrap is new, but in the tradition of Victorian scraps and die cut ornaments of old. The archetype poignant clown with tears behind his smile is represented here in this gorgeous reproduction die cut.

This can easily be used as a delightful gift tag (there is a space for to: & from: on the back), or an old-fashioned ornament or as an addition to your circus artwork. Use a bit of mica or glass glitter and you might even fool someone into thinking this is an old one.

The little die cut is made of lightweight cardboard rather than paper, so you might even add an easel backing for stand-up display. It is not embossed. The clown measures 5-7/16 high by about 3-3/4 inches wide.

Old tickets are so much fun! They're great for assemblage, card-making, even to use for tickets (imagine that!!!) These great old tickets are for a special event at a wonderful old family-owned amusement park (nope, not a theme park) in Western Pennsylvania - not too far from SilverCrow. At one time there were many of these small parks around - people didn't drive as far for a day of fun or fly, for goodness' sake! Now there are still two left - Kennywood and Idlewild Park (with Storybook Forest, Mr. Roger's Neighborhood & More) and a very old park, Conneaut Lake Park just re-opened. So, everything old is new again, thank goodness!

On each ticket, there is a sequenced number and the rest of the ticket reads,

WHITE SWAN PARK
Airport Parkway - PGH., PA.
SPECIAL TICKET
Good for All Amusements
Not Redeemable
Not Good
Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays
CLOSED MONDAYS

Globe Ticket Company, Phila.

These tickets are quite collectable in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, area because there were so many kids (who are now much older) with so many wonderful memories there.

This little fellow is having the time of his life, that's for sure! With his binoculars almost glued to his eyes, he's watching a circus act - we're not even sure which one. The glee in this face is the highlight of this fine example of black and white photographic portraiture that has come to be known by artist Weegee (Arthur Fellig).

Fellig's nickname, Weegee, is a phonetic version of Ouija. As a news photographer, he was so often the first to arrive at the scene after a crime, a fire or other event. But, we was also known for documenting typical events of his time in New York, such as this wonderful circus scene.

Black Skull Balloons

Oh, wow! Were we ever excited to have found these! These are so very special - they were made in the 1940s and were usually include with a figural balloon, like a clown or Santa or even a Disney character. They were actually mentioned in the June, 1951 issue of Mechanix Illustrated.

This little cardboard gizmo looks just like a pair of clown shoes. The die-cut cardboard is charming in its simplicity. And, the instructions are printed right on the item itself:

TOSS-UP BALLOON
Twist balloon at mouthpiece,
inserting end in hole in card-
board feet, pull up through slot.

Now the fun begins. Once the balloon is placed in the shoes, you toss it up and wow! it lands on its feet. The simple physical dynamics make it work.

We have seen packages of these with their balloons sell for as high as $85.00!

Why not have some old-fashioned fun with these at your next party with balloons. These are meant for balloons you blow up yourself, not for helium-inflated balloons.

Each piece measures about 5 by 3-1/2 inches. They arrive in packages of 5. Balloon not included.

Maxfield Parrish Postcard Booklet

This alluring print, The Lantern Bearers (1910), by Maxfield Parrish has been professionally matted and transformed into a frameable note card. It will fit any standard 5 by 7 inch frame. The card is blank inside, so you can add your own message. Each comes with a white acid free, beveled edge mat that has been professionally cut. Each card is sealed in a protective sleeve that you remove before sending it in the accompanying envelope.

Maxfield Parrish and fellow artists of his time represented the Art Nouveau movement to some extent, but is best known for his oft-copied individualistic style. Parrish's art features extremely luminous colors. In fact, he even had a color named for him - Parrish Blue.

His technique was masterful, created by glazing - creating a base of blue and white, then varnishing, then adding a color, then varnish, etc.

Now you have a card that becomes a present, too! Such a dazzling print as this might cost much more on its own!

Sideshows have virtually disappeared from the Circus and Carnival Circuit although a few can still be seen around the world. Because many of the acts involved people and animals with disabilities and handicaps, customers had dwindled, not wanting to take advantage of the performers. There was much protest by the performers themselves, because often these were the only jobs available to them. This provocative photograph features small and large people, sword swallowers and performs of all kinds.

From about 1901 (right after the Victorian period) up to about 1910, or even as late as 1918 (after World War I), British society suffered a very rigid system, despite the new philosophies and politics floating about. The want (and need) for more liberal thought and a move for greater social acceptance of all British started despite the seemingly unmovable morés at the time.

The Edwardian Period was also known as the Belle Époque (Beautiful Era), a time for elegant masquerade balls with gorgeous gowns and absurd masks such as this, our Jester Cigarette Smoker.

The mask arrives flat and is simple to wear with black ribbon on either side for securing your mask. It measures about 10-1/2 inches.

More Brooches & Pins

April Fool's Day (the first of April) finds its roots in so many different traditions, it's hard to sort them all out. The vast number of these histories seem to center around the Vernal Equinox, once signaling the New Year. As today, many were known to exchange hopeful gifts at the beginning of the new year. So, when the calendar changed to feature January 1 as beginning each year, many protested by making mock gifts and ceremonies. This negative reaction turned into the April Fool's Jokes we have today.

We were delighted to be able to offer you such a wonderful piece for such a fun holiday!

Fun-loving, festive and full of life, our little jester pin is from Maximal Art by John Wind. It measures 3/4 inch by 2 inches and is accented with Austrian crystals, glitter and more.

Like all Maximal Art jewelry, this sprightly brooch is designed by artist John Wind. This wonderful design features vintage style art, 14 karat gold plating and, of course, the Austrian crystals and glass beads.

Each brooch arrives in a lovely Maximal Art gift bag and is certain to charm even the most discerning eye! Many Maximal Art pieces become collectible as they retire.

I've joined a more spiritual circus act.
The performers wear soft laps, dimpled grins,
and rainbowed eyes. At dinner they bring gifts
to the table - my favorite,
the hand-milled kaleidoscope of all possibilities.

Such a wonderful thought along with such a special print of her watercolor - and in a note card! You'll want to pin this up nearby to remind you to live such a full and wonderful life. And, to remember the openings in the future porthole!

Very popular in 1920s, metamorphic images like this were created mostly in France. Depending on your focus, you might see a skeleton's skull, or, indeed, a lovely clown couple sharing champagne. The gentleman appears to plead with his beloved for some special favors.

These pictures are still as engaging as they were when initially issued as the design is so clever and the execution is superb!

Art Postcard - Elephants Outside my Window, 1983

Close-Up

Art Postcard - Elephants Outside my Window

As if the intriguing image presented of a parent and child elephant on the outside and a miniature pachyderm on the inside is not wonderful enough, the hand-written caption below, reads:

"Elephants outside my window" observed my brother Michael (all eyes and ears)...and upon awakening the folks

to relay the news, he was firmly informed that such could not be the case in Caldwell, New Jersey.

Later that day it was learned...the circus had arrived in the wee morning and unloaded down the street.

What more could anyone want to know? Use this special card for special missives, or for those ordinary ones that need a dream to be attached.

Fear of heights, fear of spiders, fear of flying, fear of death, fear of clowns--everyone is afraid of something. And these pop-ups place you in the hot seat--whether it's the dentist's chair as the drill comes spinning toward you; looking over the edge of a skyscraper whose sheer face plummets thousands of feet to the sidewalk far below; or the window seat of a plane as the oxygen mask deploys, your drink spills, and the horizon line shifts to an angle that is suddenly, terribly wrong

Brought to life by outrageously macabre artwork and startlingly innovative pop-ups, The Pop-up Book of Phobias by Gary Greenberg is an engineering marvel and cult classic in the making--an offbeat treasure for your coffee table or for a gift (especially for a therapist friend)!
