Gorgeous Large Black Mesh Millinery Rose
More Unique Adornments

When we first ordered this rose, we thought it would be different: a nice millinery-quality black rose. But, we were so very taken when it arrived. The sample we saw was not half as wonderful as the real thing! We are delighted to offer this to you - especially as it has so very many possibilities! It is made of a terrifically resilient coarse mesh fabric that allows you to adjust it slightly to your liking.

The celebration coincides with the Catholic holy days, All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day. It's popularity is spreading worldwide as well During this festival, which has roots in Aztec and other indigenous cultures, the departed are welcomed back to the world of the living. They are presented with food offerings, as well as with sugar skulls, flowers, candles and incense. These items are placed on decorated altars or in cemeteries, along with photographs and treasured personal items.

Sterling Silver Full-Length Catrina Drop Earrings
More Day of the Dead More Earrings
The coquettish image of the Catrina inspires Maria Belen Nilson's Day of the Dead Catrina Earrings. Catrina is the original creation of José Guadalupe Posada, renowned author, journalist and political cartoonist (1852-1913). Posada is credited for popularizing the Day of the Dead celebrations, especially through the creation of skeletal (calaca) cartoons that capture the Mexican attitude towards death.
One of the most renowned skeletons is the Catrina, (meaning "dapper lady"), and she is always elegantly dressed featuring a wide brimmed hat with flowers. Our earrings set measures 2-3/8 inches long by 1/2 inch wide. These are hand made, so please allow for slight variation.

Original Drawing in Hand-Made Frame - Day of the Dead Proposal
More Engagement, Weddings & Anniversaries
Our friend from Ojinaga created this wonderful framed picture. The drawing is an original based on the famous Posada drawings that illustrated the Days of the Dead so marvelously. The drawing is in black, whites and greys, but lends itself to be highlighted with color if you chose.
The deep red frame is accented in metallic gold and measures 8-1/2 inches high (including the concha trim) by 6-5/8 inches wide and is 1 inch deep. The concha (curved part on top) measures about 1-1/4 inch high by 4-3/8 inches wide. All of these measurements are approximate as each is hand made from recycled Mexican fruit crates (rejas) and occasionally, of new wood.
The center of the concha features a small calaca, or Day of the Dead Skull fashioned from dental plaster, as the artist's wife is a dentist!
Of course, you can replace the picture with our own, or add some mementos to it and further embellish the frame. You might even choose to paint the image. Please be careful adding color - we're not sure if the black lines will bleed. Please make a test on the back before you try.

Original Drawing in Hand-Made Frame - Day of the Dead Dancers
Our friend from Ojinaga created this wonderful framed picture. The drawing is an original based on the famous Posada drawings that illustrated the Days of the Dead so marvelously. The drawing is in black, whites and greys, but lends itself to be painted if you chose.
The bright red frame is accented in metallic gold and measures 7-3/4 inches high (including the concha trim) by 6-1/2 inches wide and is 1-1/4 inch deep. The concha (curved part on top) measures about 1-1/2 inch high by 4-1/2 inches wide. All of these measurements are approximate as each is hand made from recycled Mexican fruit crates (rejas) and occasionally, of new wood.
The center of the concha features a calaca, or Day of the Dead Skull fashioned from dental plaster, as the artist's wife is a dentist!

New Style
Day of the Dead of Night Necklace
From the Karyn Cantor Collection of Classic Hardware we offer you this great necklace. Featuring the work of Vancouver, British Columbia, artist Bonni Reid, this fantastic piece is just so much fun that you'll want to display it when you're not wearing it. Bonni offers a wonderful portfolio and is also an animation artist, with works on the Cartoon Network, MTV, BBC, ABC and more.
The black metal-framed illustration features a gorgeous Day of the Dead couple - perhaps it is Catrin & Catrina - in a romantic embrace in the cemetery. They might even be moon dancing. We just love the new style bow at the top of the necklace
Fashioned from mixed metals, glass beads, epoxy and imagery, the combined effect is modern and Victorian at once. The metal frame is ecologically friendly and the baked-on black enamel can be cleaned with a damp cloth.
The rosary-style chain measures 18 inches and the pendant adds 2-1/4 inches to the length. This is a robust necklace that will make any statement you want it to make!

Mini Handmade Glazed Terra Cotta Pot, Jug or Bowl with Handle
Larger Terracotta Pot
These little handmade pots, bowls and jugs are a traditional Mexican craft. They are used for doll houses as well as for ofrendas or tables in celebration of Los Dias de los Muertos. They measure about 1/2 to 3/4 inches in diameter and another little bit for the handle.
You might also choose to use these as little charms for a necklace or assemblage.
There are are shallow bowls and pots as well as a few jugs. They are all hand-formed , so each is a bit different than the next. There is a primitive glaze applied for the firing which makes these absolutely stunning in their simplicity and old-world look.
Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera created designs made of these mini pots on their kitchen walls. They were collectors of most, if not all, traditional Mexican crafts.
Several pots are shown for illustration of the variations. We receive a large batch of these. No two are the same, so please let us choose one for you.

Past - Present - Future Nicho
More Nichos
More Diablos
Cielito Lindo Estudio is one of the premier Mexican folk art studios in San Miguel de Allende. Incorporating traditional elements of Mexican culture, humour, materials and artisanal legacy, Cielito Lindo's works have become recognizable as unique and on the cutting edge of design. Each nicho has been hand forged and hand adorned and painted with the electric colors that are part of Mexico's heritage. Collected by museums as well as private art collectors, Cielito Lindo pieces are treasures that will last for generations.
This traditional 3-window nicho represents an epiphany of sorts. Each section is a window to the soul of the artist or owner. The first window features a hand-made clay dark angel, a devil with black wings, standing amidst the fires below, and reads:
MI PASADO ES DEL DIABLO
(My Past belonged to the Devil)
The second window simply surrounds a mirror, framed by calla lilies and toped with an image of the evil eye protector. It reads:
MI PRESENTE ES MIO
(My Present is Mine)
The last window features an image of God surrounded by hand painted clouds, mini angel statues, along with a milagro and images of saints and Mary under glass domes. It reads:
MI FUTURO ES DE DIOS
(My Future belongs to God)
Not only has the piece been hand-painted but it features dimensional images and painting techniques as well.
These vary slightly as all are handmade and painted. Each is more wonderful than the next! It measures about 12 inches wide by 7-1/2 inches tall and 1-1/4 inch deep.

Catrina & Catrin Sugar Skull or Lollipop Mold
More Sugar Skull Molds & Other Day of the Dead Sundries
Sugar Skulls are a traditional folk art from Central and southern Mexico. They are customarily used in Day of the Dead celebrations. Local village open air markets offer mounds of colorful sugar skulls for sale during the week preceding the Day of the Dead. Now you can make your own!
Over the last few years, people have been producing non-traditional candies and other items such as soaps and plaster images in the same manner of the sugar skulls.
Our molds can be used to make the traditional sugar skulls, chocolate skull lollipops and even soaps and plaster items.
This mold makes two skulls or skull lollipops (if you add lollipop sticks)! It features Catrina as a bride and Catrin, the Baron of the Cemetery, as her groom. Catrina measures about 4 inches high by 2-1/2 inches wide and about 3/4 inch deep. The Baron measures 4-3/4 inches high (including his top hat), by about 2 inches wide and about 7/8 inch deep.

Diego Rivera Fine Art Temporary Tattoos
Bravo! Finally, we have wearable art that reflects the soul of Mexico - at a very reasonable price! For thousands of years, artisans in Mexico have expressed the joy, spirit and creativity of their culture in a splendid array of crafts, painting, pottery, sculpture and textiles.
Drawing on that rich heritage, here is a quartet of stylized folk art tattoos to adorn an ankle, a shoulder or any other part of the body. A mosaic armadillo, a flower-embellished sugar skull, a dotty little donkey and Day of the Dead pallbearers await you in a splash of vivid color.

Old-Fashioned Chenille Scrap Ornament - Calavera (Skeleton)
We just can't get enough chenille pipe cleaner ornaments and other creations! This is one of the best we've seen! Just the way the ribs are formed is exciting enough, but the knees and hips! What a wonderful design. We can't say for sure if this was based on an ornament of old, but it certainly is reminiscent of the ornaments made in the earlier 20th century.
The little skull is a reproduction die-cut scrap just like those of the Victorian era. Although his bones can easily be manipulated as any pipe-cleaner can, we suggest you be careful not to rearrange the bones too much, or it might be difficult to return him to his original wonderful self! He comes with a little string hanger attached to his neck!
Two calaveras (skeletons) shown for illustration only.

Art Postcard - Day of the Dead Jester
This fellow either died laughing or told such an awfully bad joke. We love the imagery here. This skeleton is subtly dressed in a jesters hat and collar and enjoying his moment - whatever it might be. The hint of pastel wash to his hat and collar lend an even more curious air to the image. It is signed, R.W., but we're not sure of the artist. But there is certainly a Posada-like tone to this great postcard.
Heart Full of Skulls Charm
What a unique design - and you can use it as a charm or even as a special pendant. This antiqued silvery heart charm is loaded with skulls! But, at first, it is not so evident - making this even more fun. The pendant measures about 1-1/2 inch by 1 inch. And, don't you just love that the loop is asymmetrical, on the upper left curve of the heart?

Loteria de la Muerte (Day of the Dead Loteria Game)
More Loteria & Games
What a very special Loteria this is! It seems that in Mexico, there are at least 100 names for death! This loteria celebrates 50 of these names. This game is played in the same manner as the traditional loteria games, the only difference being the images.
Mexican artist Erik de Luna has captured the essence of these 100 names and has created this really neat game with 50 of those images. The 10 tablas or playing boards each feature 9 images representing La Muerta (death). The playing deck features 50 different images - one on each of the cards. The tablas each measure 9 by 13-1/2 inches and the cards measure 2-1/2 by 3-3/4 inches
To play, simply shuffle the cards, then, turn them over one at a time and call out the name of the card. Contestants place a marker on the image of that card if it is on their playing boards. The rest is just like BINGO!
We love these not only for their adaptation into the loteria game, but for their eccentricity and wonderful artwork. You might choose to integrate this into your art rather than play the game.

Posada's Popular Mexican Prints
Mexico's Festival of Communion with the Departed - Los Dias de Muertos, un Festival de Comunion con los Muertos en Mexico.
José Guadalupe Posada (1852-1913) was Mexico's illustrious graphic artist. For over forty years, he worked tirelessly as an incorruptible and truly popular artist, illustrating cookbooks and fortune-telling books, collections of songs and riddles, periodicals and newspapers, children's books and novels and most of all- the famous broadsides that were distributed throughout the country. After his death he was venerated by the new generation of artists -- Rivera, Orozco and many others, who realized that he had both saved and renewed the art of engraving in Mexico and who incorporated much of his imagery into their own work.
There are 273 reproductions of Posada's best engravings - all done for the printer & publisher A. Vanegas Arroyo in Mexico City. Along with the prints, you'll find explanatory notes and commentary, often with topical meaning to what otherwise appears vague or allegorical.

The Days of the Dead - Los Dias de Muertos - A Book
More Books
This wonderful book offers a remarkable look at Mexico's traditional holiday honoring departed ancestors, friends, and family. Each aspect of the multi-day festival is carefully explored: the journey to the cemeteries to spruce up neglected gravesites, the lively marketplace selling breads and candies in the shapes of skulls and skeletons, the peaceful vigil as friends and families crowd the cemeteries to await the arrival of their loved ones through the long night.
San Francisco-based photographer John Greenleigh traveled to small towns in Mexico in four different years to document this extraordinary festival. Accompanied by evocative text by cultural scholar Rosalind Rosoff Beimler, the pictures speak eloquently to a ritual that is at once mocking and respectful of death---and ultimately affirming of human life.
This Smythe-sewn paperbound book (with flaps) contains 112 pages and over 100 color photos and measures 10 x 9-5/8 inches. Text is bilingual: Spanish and English.

Teatro de México: A Folk Art Toy Theater
Pollock's Britannia Toy Theatre Also Available
Bienvenido to the Teatro de Mexico, where a troupe of spirited players perform on three beautiful stages. Drawing on the exuberant iconography of the skeleton in Mexican culture, Bunny Pierce Huffman has created whimsical, multidimensional scenes of Mexican life circa 1900, enacted by skeleton figures similar to those in Day of the Dead tableaux and in Mexican folk art, satire, and drama.

A unique diversion for all ages, this toy theater can also be used as a festive tabletop decoration for parties or as part of a personalized Day of the Dead altar. A six-page bilingual booklet provides assembly instructions and an explanation of the customs that have inspired this theater.

Day of the Dead Sundries
More Christmas
Yes, Virginia, there is a Day of the Dead Santa Claus! Who better to deliver gifts to all the Muertos we remember? Dressed in his finest suit of red with fluffy white trim, our Day of the Dead Santa Claus will make a welcome addition to your holiday décor! He has a hanging loop atop his cap and he measures about 4-1/2 inches tall. He is definitely meant for hanging as he cannot stand alone.
Our Santa Claus ornaments are so finely detailed down to the buttons on his bright red jacket and individually painted fingers. Our Santa is quite slim, as are most skeletons!
Just like the rest of our Day of the Dead Figurines, each of these Santa Muertos is hand sculpted and painted by traditional artisans in Mexico. Please let us choose one for you.

Small MATTE Hand-Painted Ceramic Sugar Skull Bead
Sugar Skull Bead
Flower Skull Bead
Each of these beads has been created by hand and then hand finished. Most of the skeleton has been finished in bisque (a matte textural finish). Little bits of shiny glaze have been added in white and in colors on the 3-dimensional accented parts (like the flowers). The eye sockets have been darkened, the teeth painted in and glazed and little filigree strokes have been added.
Every bead is hand painted and fired for a striking appearance. As you can see from the illustration, no two are painted the same, so please let us choose one for you. Colors vary, so we cannot promise a certain color, but if you choose to specify a color, we will try to honor your request. Each order brings us different colors, so our selection often varies.
Two beads shown for illustration of the variability only. Each bead measures about 3/4 by 1/2 inch. The stringing hole is about 1mm and runs from side to side at ear level.
