Vintage Enamel Baseball Pin (New Old Stock)
More Pins
More Vintage
More Summer
More Toys & Games
We were lucky to find a whole bunch of these cabochon pins as new old stock - never used - in a Brooklyn, New York warehouse. They are cleverly made and are in pretty nice shape considering that they were meant only to be novelties - and they are still around! There is slight wear from handling, but that's about it.
It appears that the cabs are made of metal and that the cabochon is white enamel and the stitching image has been transferred onto the cabochon either by printing or some other method.
We make a point of not cleaning vintage items - just in case! We wouldn't want to ruin the value.
If you care to do so, you might re-work these into assemblage pieces by removing the cabochon and applying a new image, or, indeed by replacing it with something else. Please be careful if you choose to remove the cabochon - especially if you are bending the prongs.
These were made by a novelty company - not a jewelry company - so please be careful when working with them.
Each measures 15/16 inch in diameter and has a self-pin on back that has been attached mechanically rather than by adhesive. So, for novelties, these are pretty well made.
These pins are from the 1950s and 1960s and were meant for sale in 5 and 10 cent stores such as Murphy's, Ben Franklin and Woolworths. We love them for embellishment and just for the memories (of the future)! They measure 1-1/2 inch in diameter and make a swell gift package decoration, too!
Not for children.

Autentica - Loteria El Gallo
More Loteria & Other Games
You'll love our authentic Mexican Loteria Game. The game is played much like American Bingo -- so it is sometimes even called Mexican Bingo.
There are many brands in Mexico and this is one of the older ones. Each brand features different artwork and different tablas (or playing board) and naipes (cards).
Each of the 10 tablas features 16 different pictures. The back of each cardboard features a pencil puzzle - a maze, connect the dots or another. The playing boards measure 8 inches by 5-1/8 inch.
There are 54 naipes (cards) that are numbered and contain the same artwork as on the cards. Cards are 3-3/4 inches by 2-1/2 inches. There is one additional card that instructs the player on the correct way to shuffle cards.
The artwork on this set seems a bit brighter than our other sets.

Little dexterity games like these are still popular today - just try to get everyone of the little balls into the round indentations - and you'll win.
These little round games measure 1-5/16 inch in diameter and just over 1/4 inch high. The back of each game is black. The inside illustration varies:
Little Girl at a Carnival or Mardi Gras Monkey (Politically Incorrect) Native American Indian Cowboy
These are not as clear as we'd like to see them, but they are over 50 years old, so some wear is to be expected.

When I was little, we had a board game called The Game of the States. It was great fun and a wonderful learning experience, too. My Dad used to quiz me on everything - state birds, capitals, spelling, when the state entered the union and more.
This clever backpack or travel game allows some of the same kind of fun even today! And, it's magnetic so the parts are easier to keep together.
I can still say the state name in alphabetical order in less than 30 seconds. Why not try this yourself!?

Vintage Bible Cubes Game
For two or more players, this clever game was developed in 1963 by The Standard Publishing Company of Cincinnati, Ohio. It was designed to help children (of all ages) to learn the books of the bible and their order.
The cubes are really 5/8 by 5/8 by 3/4 inch and feature stickers with the book names. Instructions are included, but some of these are typed copies rather than the original instructions. The cardboard tubes that hold the games measure 6 inches high by 2-1/2 inches in diameter. Each end of the tubes is metal, probably tin.
These games show some wear as they were well used. Some even have the child's name on the can!

Old Stock Tin Cranked Man at his Whetstone
More Toys
No longer available, this nicely made tin toy features a man at a whetstone sharpening a knife. Simply crank the the red wheel with the offset crank and it all moves - his foot up and down as though he were using that movement to run the stone. And the wheel will turn and the knife gets "sharpened".
These are old stock from the 1970s through the 1990s. The elastic that cranks the stone is stretched on some of the toys and may need to be replaced. It needn't be elastic, string should work just as well. We have not touched these toys as we didn't want to open all of the boxes and ruin their original state.

Full Sheet of Vintage Coca-Cola (COKE) Bingo Markers
More Ephemera
Coke items are always popular and we love this sheet of vintage Coca-Cola bingo markers! Each of the markers is circular and is perforated, so that you can punch each one out individually, if you please.
The entire sheet is 5-1/2 inches square, making each of the markers around 7/8 inch in diameter. These sheets are new old stock - never used. The top and bottom edges show what looks like some rough wear. But, really it was the perforation for tearing the sheets apart. The sheets came in long strips and were torn off as needed.
These were used for bingo games in charity halls and military canteens in the 1940s through the 1950s.
These are great for lots of reasons! Of course, Coke collectors will love the sheet as is. But, consider punching out the markers and using them in an invitation to a 1940s or 1950s-style party. Or, wouldn't one be just great in scrapbook featuring a World War II romance at the canteen? Cokes were the rage, that's for sure! Although older, they are modern enough looking that they could be used in a modern collage or memory book as well.
At 22¢ per marker, there are just so many possibilities!

What we love about this little game is it's old-time workmanship and it's look and feel. This classic dexterity puzzle is well made of cardboard box with a clear plastic window on top. The object of the puzzle is printed on the box lid, which measures 3-3/4 by 2-1/2 inches (and is 1-1/2 inch high). The box lid can re-cover the plastic top for safekeeping when not in play.

More Playing Cards
This fashionable parlour game was played at social gatherings over a century ago. The text of this antique game has been reproduced without alteration, so it is as amusing today as it was in earlier times:
YOUR CONDITION IN OLD AGE 1. You will be lively and cheerful. 2. You will be respected. ... 7. You will be a dyspeptic snuff-taker.
The simple rules: The leader of the game retains the cards of Destiny and request each member of the party to draw a numbered Soothsayer card. In rotation, players call our the number on their Soothsayer card. The leader reads the Destiny card along with the answer that corresponds to the number given by the player. Of course there are many of each cards - including one that reads:
WHAT WILL BE THE CONSEQUENCE IF I MARRY ?
Whatever the outcome for any of the players, we're pretty sure you'll have lots of fun. And, the graphics are just terrific! The cards arrive in a beautiful slipcase for safe keeping measuring 2-1/2 by 3-1/2 inches.

Loteria de la Muerte (Day of the Dead Loteria Game)
More Loteria & Games
More Day of the Dead Sundries & Specialties
What a very special Loteria this is! It seems that in Mexico, there are at least 100 names for death! This loteria celebrates 50 of these names. This game is played in the same manner as the traditional loteria games, the only difference being the images.
Mexican artist Erik de Luna has captured the essence of these 100 names and has created this really neat game with 50 of those images. The 10 tablas or playing boards each feature 9 images representing La Muerta (death). The playing deck features 50 different images - one on each of the cards. The tablas each measure 9 by 13-1/2 inches and the cards measure 2-1/2 by 3-3/4 inches
To play, simply shuffle the cards, then, turn them over one at a time and call out the name of the card. Contestants place a marker on the image of that card if it is on their playing boards. The rest is just like BINGO!
We love these not only for their adaptation into the loteria game, but for their eccentricity and wonderful artwork. You might choose to integrate this into your art rather than play the game.

More Alice
Widely known as the author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and other books for children, Lewis Carroll (Charles L. Dodgson) also excelled as a mathematician and inventor of puzzles. Toward the end of his life, Carroll worked on a book of mathematical puzzles and games but died before it was completed. This book is a new compilation of Carroll's surviving puzzles and games, assembled and edited by Edward Wakeling, a Lewis Carroll scholar and writer on mathematics. Included are a substantial number of problems that Carroll had intended for his collection.
Among the problems - many published here for the first time - are these (and 24 more) baffling brainteasers:
Cakes in a Row
Looking-Glass Time
Hidden Names
Diverse Doublets
Arithmetical Croquet
A Sticky Problem
Painting Cubes
An Amazing Maze
Alice's Multiplication Tables
Four Brothers and a Monkey
Handicaps
Mischmasch
Square Numbers
Wise Eyes
Two Clocks
The Number Forty-Two

In addition to Carroll's original mathematical inventions and games, the editor has supplied a few original problems of his own. Some hints and solutions are also provided. Enhanced with some of John Tenniel's famous illustrations, this volume is a delightful double treat for any puzzle enthusiast or lover of the Alice books.

Playground and Indoor Games for Boys and Girls
We were delighted to find this nice hardbound historical facsimile book. Stumped when asked by a child about the exact rules of Hopscotch, we had nowhere to turn. Of course the internet provided us with a myriad of variations, and, of course, each of our memories recollected differently, sometimes in complete conflict with another set of rules! So, we had ice cream instead!
First published about 1910, this book will make a major contribution to encourage children to play more of the traditional games. The 107 indoor and 119 playground games, such as Soldier, Hopscotch and Trees, make a wide variety from which to choose.
Some games are illustrated, and, although we've not tried them all, we can only imaging that all are lots of fun! It measures 21cm by 15cm and is packed with a fun-filled 128 pages.

Hieroglyphical Signatures - Puzzles from the Past
More African Inspired Items
More Shakespeare
This elegant folder of games was a favorite amusement during the 19th century was the creation and deciphering of rebus puzzles. The word rebus is Latin for by things. A rebus is composed of pictures that suggest the syllables of the word they represent.
Hieroglyphical Signatures is a reproduction of a mid-19th century rebus series created by J.T. Hart. The beautiful ribbon-tied portfolio holds six individual sheets containing hundreds of delicate miniature illustrations depicting the names of composers, musicians, vocalists, chorus singers and theatrical performer. The original plates have been recreated as found with some of the illustrations having been deftly hand-colored while others were left charmingly monochromatic. The seventh sheet is the original key for solving each of the rebus puzzles!
Among these enigmatic representations, you'll find the names of many renowned personalities such as Beethoven, Chopin and, of course, Shakespeare. There are also many names of those who were very popular contemporaries of the mid 1800s who are now less well known.
Historians will find this game most challenging, while the exquisite drawings provide inspiration to those with a creative eye.

The Wedding Game - Circa 1880 Reproduction
More Weddings & Anniversaries
More Victorian
This enchanting playing card game is a fine quality reproduction of a splendid set from around 1880, hardly seen for decades! Such a beautifully illustrated parlor game of simpler times is a welcome relief from the overly violent electronic games of today. The gentle games of the past were designed to stimulate the mind and improve memory and math skills.
The Wedding Game was originally published in 1880. This charming card game chronicles a Bride and Groom's trip to the altar. As in any wedding, players pay and receive according to directions, along the way finding bridesmaids, groomsmen, the Parson and a clerk - all the while avoiding the Lawyer, the Bride's Aunt and a rejected suitor.
If the Lawyer is encountered during the game, the wedding is postponed! It seems that very little has changed in the last century or so!
The game comes in a beautiful slipcase box that is embellished with hand-applied iridescent glitter and tied with a satin ribbon bow. The 3-1/2 by 4-3/4 inch cards are produced in a style evocative of pastel lithographs of their original day. There are 24 character cards, charmingly illustrated and 25 pay cards.
Consider this lovely deck as an excellent bridal shower game or wedding table favor! What fun for an anniversary - a pleasant way to reminisce.
