Silvery Medal featuring La Monserrat (Black Madonna)

The Virgin of Montserrat is a statue of the Virgin Mary and infant Christ venerated at the Santa Maria de Montserrat monastery in the Montserrat mountain in Catalonia, Spain. She is a black Madonna. And for that reason, she is often called La Moreneta ("The little dark-skinned one"). Legend has it that she was carved in Jerusalem in the very early days of the Catholic Church, but it is really from the late 12th century as it is carved in the Romanesque style. It is believed that the Benedictine monks built their monastery around the statue, rather than move it. It is surrounded by an alter of gold and many make pilgrimage to pay homage to La Monserrat.

Featuring a lovely print of the Blessed Mother holding the Christ Child, our unique blue nicho has been hand embellished for a very special shrine.
The cross and has been hand cut and embossed with additional ornamentation soldered. A self hook on back makes it easy for you to hand this lovely piece, but it also stands nicely on its own.
The glass door closes with a traditional sliding latch on the side as you view the picture. The picture may be removed if you choose to add your own. The deep niche offers a shadowbox effect that will allow you to add some of your own offerings to the piece.
The entire piece measures 8-1/4 inches high by 4-1/8 inch aide. The niche is large and deep - measuring 5 by 4 inches and just about 1 inch deep.
Because these are hand made, there will be some slight variation, but all of them are cut and painted similarly with the same religious illustration.

The Mano Poderosa image has been brought to us from Hispanic influences far back in to the beginnings of Christianity. Known as the Powerful Hand of God in English, the image features all kinds of symbolism - the stigmata, angels, the baby Jesus, saints and the Blessed Mother among others. There are clouds, halos, swords and more.
The artisan has created these one-of-a-kind ornaments by cutting out the tin, painting it and lightly découpaging a holy card featuring La Mano Poderosa.

This vintage devotional scapular features a black and white printed image of Jesus as Ecce Homo. Ecce Homo generally refers to Jesus as he was presented to the crowds after having been scourged. Pontius Pilot presented Christ, wearing his Crown of Thorns, to the crowds and uttered:

(Behold the Man)
Although not printed or sewn anywhere on the piece, it is believed that a scapular helps protect the soul of the wearer and it is usually accompanied by the invocation:
Whosoever dies wearing this Scapular shall not suffer eternal fire.
The picture has been protected by glass and is then framed with brown felt and hand embroidered. The backing piece is reinforced felt that has been hand sewn. Perhaps there is a devotional inside - but we did not open the scapulars to determine this. The hanging string is just that - cotton string or cord.
The brown pieces are approximately 1 inch long by 15/16 inch wide, but vary slightly as these all hand made.

The Czech Republic has long been acknowledged a producer of superb glass products. Even with that reputation, you'll be amazed at the workmanship on these tiny rosaries and their cases!
Most of the cases are 1-1/4 inches square - a few are 1 inch by 1-1/4 inches. The base is elegant glass in various colors - no two are the same! And the embossed metal door closes with a tiny latch. The rosary beads are also Czech glass and are so tiny, it's hard to believe they were hand made. The crucifix and other medal parts are all silvery metal and incredibly have quite a bit of detail as well.

Originating in the 15 century, the Black Madonna is most often associated with the portrait found in Czestochowa, Poland. Some say that the extraordinary power of the Black Madonna is a strength that is not expressed in portraits of the lighter-skinned Mary, who is most often associated with purity and obedience. While the Madonna is still the Mother of Jesus, the diverse representations are not only images of her likeness, but symbolic of her spirit as well. Others suggest that there is a closer connection between the Czestochowa and the archetypal Earth Mother of many cultures, who intercedes for fertility and transcends both life and death.
This sheet of 9 fancy cut stickers - each the same - is accented with metallic highlights. Each sticker measures 1-3/4 inch high by 1-1/8 inch wide and would make an excellent addition to a shrine or nicho.

This sweet and beautiful card dates from 1976 and was developed for the Church pastor to send to the congregants at Christmastide. The scripture selection is from the Good News Bible. Decorated with holly and ribbons, the postcard reads:
This was how the birth of Jesus Christ took place. His mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, but before they were married, she found out that she was going to have a baby by the Holy Spirit. Joseph was a man who always did what was right, but he did not want to disgrace Mary publicly; so he made plans to break the engagement privately. While he was thinking about this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, descendant of David, do not be afraid to make Mary to be your wife. For it is by the Holy Spirit that she was conceived. She will have a son, and you will name him Jesus - because he will save his people from their sins."
Now all of this happened in order to make come true what the Lord had said through the prophet, "A virgin will be come pregnant and have a son, and he will be called Immanuel" (which means, "God is with us").
So when Joseph woke up, he married Mary, as the angel of the Lord had told him to. But he had no sexual relations with her before she gave birth to her son. And Joseph named him Jesus.

Oil Painting of Jesus on Dried Ficus Leaf

Hand painted in oil on dried skeleton leaves, these striking portraits of Jesus are quite out of the ordinary.
This style of painting is an involved process, requiring the artist to first prepare the leaf. After the leaf's regular cycle of life, turning from pinkish-red to a deep green. Once green, the leaf is soaked in water for 8 or more hours and then rinsed to remove all but the skeleton or the veins of the leaf.
Leaves are dried in sunlight, which takes several hours to days. Because of the strength of the the leaf, it makes a wonderful "canvas" for oil paintings. This art form was developed in India and continues there today (where the trees grow). Each painting takes 3 to 4 weeks to complete. The approximate size of the leaf is 4-1/2 inches wide by around 8 inches high.
Each leaf is, of course, natural and therefore everyone is completely different from the other. Each leaf features a portrait of Jesus, which may vary from Ecce Homo, to a profile, to the Sacred Heart. No two are alike, but all are stunningly created. Please let us choose one for you.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Medal

Our Lady of Perpetual Help is a treasured representation of the Blessed Virgin Mary that has been associated with a Byzantine icon or image of the same name. There is some controversy about the original date of the image - ranging from the 13th through the 15th centuries. The actual icon is in Rome and has been there since the late 1400s.
This is a highly recognizable image of the Virgin Mary holding the Baby Jesus in her arms. Catholics have prayed to the Blessed Mother to intercede on their behalf, with her son, Jesus, for help. Perhaps the reason for the popularity of the image is Mary's gaze directly at the viewer, rather than down at her son, conveying her care for the world at large and individuals in particular.
This image is particularly special to us as it was our Grandmother's favorite. Although we never knew her, we have heard of her patience, kindness and open arms of love. And, this lovely medal features a very detailed image of Our Lady.

New Mini Icon with Jesus and Mary

Icons of Jesus Christ often picture the image of Christ Pantocrator, meaning Christ, Ruler of All. It is one of the first images of Christ painted by devoted early Christians and is still the central figure of icons of Eastern Orthodox Church.
Christ is usually pictured holding the New Testament of the Bible in his left and and is making the familiar gesture of teaching and blessing with his right.
Our little wooden icon features one image of Mary with the baby Jesus as well as Christ Pantocrator. It is hand-made, with the traditional sensibility of Byzantine art. It measures 2-1/8 inches by 3-1/2 inches when open. The hinge allows it to close for portability and for display.

Created from a traditional holy card, this colorful postcard highlights so many different images, it is almost impossible to interpret them all. There are angels and cherubs, lost souls in the flames of purgatory as well as the Anima Sola. There also appear to be tiny souls in Limbo, but we cannot be sure of that.

Aluminum Ex Voto - The Infant of Prague
There are many stories that speak of the origins of the Infant of Prague. They all agree that the special statue given to the Carmelite order is a statue of the infant Jesus. Many carvings of such statues had been created throughout Europe over time.
The most likely history begins in 1628 when a small - about 19 inches tall - detailed, almost perfect statue of the Infant Jesus in wax was brought into Bohemia by a Spanish princess. She told them that, if they honored the statue, they would never be in need. The Carmelite novices voluntarily became poor and, as such, honored the statue of the Infant. When Emperor Ferdinand II (Hapsburg) heard of this, he arranged to send 2,000 Florins and a monthly stipend to support the order and their good works.
This aluminum milagro or ex voto celebrates the Infant of Prague and measures 2 inches high by 1-1/2 inch wide and is quite light to the touch.

3D Art Postcard - The Last Supper

Perhaps one of the most recognizable images, The Last Supper features Jesus and his Twelve Apostles. Before Leonardo DaVinci placed all of the diners on one side of the table, most depictions of the last supper showed the diners on both sides of the table, some with their backs to the viewer. This image, based on DaVinci's, shows all of the Apostles on the same side of the table as Jesus.
The image transforms from Jesus sitting alone at the table, to a full table of diners. Although the transformation from one image to the next is hard to notice online, we're sure you'll be as awed by the images in person.

Mini Triptych Byzantine Icon with Mary & Angels

Icons are associated with the Byzantine rite churches. This lovely handmade triptych (three panel) wooden icon has been hand-carved on the back and individual icons have been découpaged to the front. The images feature Mary in the center with Archangels on either side.
The angel panels are attached by hinges allowing them to close up so that only the wood is seen from the outside. This style was originally created centuries ago for the persecuted who believed in the angels, saints, Mary and Jesus, to be able to hide their images from the persecutors.
The images are highlighted with metallic golden paper, and, in some cases, gold leaf. The entire piece measures 2 inches high by 3 wide inches when open. The hinges allow it to close for portability and for display. When closed, it measures 2 by 2 inches.
The images of Mary usually include Jesus, but a few feature Our Lady alone. Usually one of the angels is St Michael the Archangel, some feature Gabriel or Raphael.
Because these are handmade, each is different from the next, so please let us choose one for you.

Just what you need for your holy shrines or other artwork, these lovely Victorian style scraps are printed and die-cut in the same manner as they have been for decades. Although they are new, they are a fine reproduction of the early chromolithographed scraps. Each image is skillfully die cut and accented by expert embossing to highlight the 25 wonderful images.
Most of the images feature Jesus Christ, some with the entire Holy Family. You can also find St Anthony, St Theresa, angels, the Eucharist, and others.
The scrap relief sheet is approximately 9 inches by 7 inches, ready for you to clip and use in your artwork. And each sheet is lightly embossed to accent the images.

The image of Maria and Child is an embossed and die cut chromolithograph scrap. This double-sided ornament is accented with tiny golden Dresden embossed and die-cut stars on a spun glass circle base. The entire piece is mounted on a spiral wire, giving it the strength to stand tall. The circle of glass measures just over 6-1/4 inches in diameter. With the spiral, the piece measures 9-1/2 inches high and will top any tree with grace.
Such a tree topper have adorned your Great Grandma's Christmas tree. The glass fibers reflect lights in a way you'll not be able to imagine unless you've seen it!

Distressed Leather Icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help
Our Lady of Perpetual Help is one of the many titles given to the Blessed Virgin Mary. A Byzantine icon named Our Lady of Perpetual Help was created sometime between the 13th and 15th centuries (there has been much controversy over the exact date). The original icon has been in Rome since at least the late 15th century, but is truly in the style of an Icon of the Eastern Orthodox Church. She is known in the Orthodox iconography as the Theotokos of the Passion. Catholics have long revered this image as representative of the ability of Mary to intercede with their prayers to Jesus Christ, her son, pictured with her in the icon.
This popular image has been much copied and reproduced, as it has been here. The image has been printed on the distressed leather and then accented by hand with golden ink or paint, highlighting the image to create a mini masterpiece! The icon measures 3-1/4 inches by 5 inches and the hanging leather adds approximately an additional 3-1/4 inches in height.

Our golden charm features a resin portrait of Jesus in the style of the Orthodox religions. Typically called Christ Pantocrator, or the the Lord of All, the full-size image has been revered for centuries as an icon. Featured in this charm is Christ's visage in full and bight color on a golden charm.
Each charm is made of brass and then layered with gold. The image has been lacquered for protection. On the charm's reverse side is a cross with rays beaming around it. The filigree around the edges lends itself well to this style of charm. It measures 1-1/16 inch high (without the loop) and 3/4 inch wide.

Spiritual Entreaty Ashtray
Now we know this is irreverent, but the entreaty is excellent, all the same. Our heavy glass ashtray should easily affront the guilt of any smoker. The urgent warning, JESUS HATES IT WHEN YOU SMOKE is displayed with a picture. We tried it on a few hard-to-quit smokers, and each of them didn't smoke - at least near this ashtray.
The picture is on the reverse of the glass, so the image will not be tarnished if anyone dare use this ashtray.

We fell in love with this image of Madonna and Child. The colors are at once elegantly bright and earthen. The image is framed in silver metal with tiny accents at the top and bottom.

If these scraps aren't vintage, they're the best reproduction we've ever seen! The images of saints and Jesus are surrounded by die cut frames of roses an decorative edgings. The variation from pastel to brighter hue is amazing. The images have an ethereal quality about them, much the same as their subject matter.
This scrap relief sheet measures approximately 4 inches high by 2-1/4 inches wide, ready for you to clip and use in your artwork. There are 12 unique images per sheet - each measuring 1 by 1/2 inch. And each of these little vignettes is artfully embossed to accent the expert die cutting - so well done, that very little trimming is necessary.

High-Quality Mini Icon with Jesus and Mary
Our little wooden icon features one image of Mary with the baby Jesus as well as Christ Pantocrator. It is hand-made, in the traditional manner of Byzantine art (painted with egg, tempera and gold). It measures 2 inches by 2-7/8 inches when open. The hinge allows it to close for portability and for display. The back of the icon's wooden base has been carved by hand also.
Mini icons have been produced by family businesses for centuries and recently many of these small shops have gone out of business. We are no longer able to purchase these hand-painted icons. Many of the smaller icons made today are still hand-made, but not as nicely as these.
