Art Postcard - Isadora Duncan

More Famous People

In a famous photograph by Arnold Genthe, Isadora Duncan reaches her hands toward the sky in a gesture of the modern dance for which she was so well known. The photo was taken sometime between 1915 and 1918. An elegant woman, she was also known for her modern ideas and lifestyle.

She is often thought to be the creator of modern dance as an art form. She was enamoured with the new and sympathized with communism. Most of her adult life was spent in Paris and in Moscow. Her life was quite scandalous, having borne two children out of wedlock, who later drowned in an odd automobile accident with their nanny.

She, too, died in a freak automobile accident, when one of her beloved long and flowing silk scarves was caught in the wheel of an open car as she was riding. It strangled her at age 50. She lived that short life fully and is remembered in so many artistic ways.

This wonderful little music box was created by Mr. Christmas. At first, it is deceiving. It appears to be a little hand-sewn book about Christmas, entitled Deck the Halls. At closer inspection, upon opening the supposed front cover of the book, you'll find wonders inside - a little outdoor scene with Victorian-style people skating in a pond. These cute little figures turn and dance around the central tree.

There is an illustrated version of the lyrics on the inside of the lid and a place to wind the music box. As the music to Deck the Halls plays sweetly, the dancing skaters move.

This old store stock item has never been used and may or may not arrive in packaging. It is no longer available from the manufacturer. The book measures 3-1/2 inches by 2 inches and is 1-1/4 inch deep.

A composer with music, a base player, and oboist and a little gentleman playing some sort of percussion instrument are features. Each of the cuts is about 3 to 4 inches high and elegantly illustrated.

Vintage Japanese simplex Whistle (Old Store Stock)

We're not quite sure how to use these little whistles, but they were all quite the rage in 1948 when novelty companies everywhere where selling them by the gross. We only have a few, but they are all vintage and have never been used (at least that's what we're told). There are old store stock from a novelty company in Ohio.

An alternative name for these was tongue whistle, so we're guessing that the tongue must be used to make these work.

Two whistles are shown for illustration - plus, the inset shows the original box design.

How sweet this silver bell is. It has a clapper that makes a sweet tinkling sound, just perfect for a charm bracelet or treasure necklace or even for a pair of earrings. The outside features an engraved pattern of leafy vines that allows the bell to shimmer when light hits it.

How much fun are these wonderful old-timey nursery rhyme scraps!? We were shocked to find out that our teenage helpers didn't even know one old-time nursery rhyme. Oh, my goodness! What a great motif for decorating a baby gift. Each sheet features six different images from the famed early nursery rhyme (from 1756!). There are 4 of each design on every sheet.

Hey diddle diddle,
The Cat and the Fiddle,
The Cow jumped over the Moon,
The little Dog laughed to see such sport,
And the Dish ran away with the Spoon.

Standing only about 2-3/4 inches high, this sweet little musician is hand-painted and hand-fired ceramic made in Cusco, Peru, famous for such lovely glazed pottery. The form is simple with hooded cape, but elegantly representative of the classic Day of the Dead Muertos.

Each harpist is different because the figures are hand painted and may vary slightly in color and pose. Color of cape varies, too. Add one to your own special nicho or retablo. So, please let us choose one for you.

What a holiday treat - this joyful Christmas bell pin. On a dark cream background, the golden bell clangs and is decorated with elegant holly and a shiny red ribbon. It would add a bit of festivity even to the dullest of wintry days.

Each pin measures about 1-5/8 inch by about 1-1/4 inch.

These are from the 1940s through the 1960s and are in superb condition. We made them into pins right here in the SilverCrow studio.

Original Drawing in Hand-Made Frame - Day of the Dead Dancers

Day of the Dead Figures

Our friend from Ojinaga created this wonderful framed picture. The drawing is an original based on the famous Posada drawings that illustrated the Days of the Dead so marvelously. The drawing is in black, whites and greys, but lends itself to be painted if you chose.

The bright red frame is accented in metallic gold and measures 7-3/4 inches high (including the concha trim) by 6-1/2 inches wide and is 1-1/4 inch deep. The concha (curved part on top) measures about 1-1/2 inch high by 4-1/2 inches wide. All of these measurements are approximate as each is hand made from recycled Mexican fruit crates (rejas) and occasionally, of new wood.

The center of the concha features a calaca, or Day of the Dead Skull fashioned from dental plaster, as the artist's wife is a dentist!

Of course, you can replace the picture with our own, or add some mementos to it and further embellish the frame. You might even choose to paint the image. Please be careful adding color - we're not sure if the black lines will bleed. Please make a test on the back before you try.

When this arrived here at SilverCrow, we all dropped everything and started to play with it. And, we've not stopped! This is probably one of the most wonderful products we've ever found to offer to you. There is no sweeter sound than that of a music box - whether mechanically wound (as this one is) or wind-up.

This boxed kit includes the crank box (that makes the actual music), a very special hole puncher, 3 blank music paper strips (with the upper staff printed on it) along with one pre-punched music strip with the tune, Happy Birthday. Of course, there is an instruction booklet included, too. But, if you're like we are, we started without reading the instructions.

We also discovered that it's great fun to run your song through backwards, and upside-down and upside-down and backward.

Art Postcard - The Infamous Rat Pack

More Famous People

The Rat Pack were a group of entertainers in Hollywood, USA, who congregated around the notorious Humphrey Bogart. Most of us know the Rat Pack as the performers in this great black & white postcard. The name was coined by Lauren Bacall, then wife of Bogart, who exclaimed, after seeing her husband and his buddies stumble in the house after a wild night in Las Vegas, "you look like a #@!# pack of rats!"

Comedian Joey Bishop was also part of the pack but is not in this photograph. Back in the late 1950s and early 1960s, they were all the rage. Mostly known as an all-boy's club, there were actually quite a few women who were part of the gang as well, including, Angie Dickinson, Marilyn Monroe, Shirley MacLaine, Lauren Bacall (the first) and Judy Garland.

We think this a great card to use as an invitation for a poker night or any other type of party involving your gang of friends.

Just in case you know some folks who have never twisted, you might just want to introduce them to some old Chubby Checker tunes and send along this card. In fact, why not have a twisting party and use these cards to invite your friends?

Start with the left foot in front of

the right foot. When first dancing the

twist, keep the weight evenly distrib-

There are eight games with words, music and instructions on playing, together with an explanation of their origins. Most striking are the superb illustrations. This enchanting book gives a refreshing glimpse of part of the English heritage almost forgotten about in this age of alternative children's entertainments - video games, organized sports and the like.

Collected and edited by Alice Gomme, and delightfully illustrated by Winifred Smith, this fantastic reproduction not only offers the games but also there is information on their origins. Ms Gomme made a significant contribution to children's literature. This was originally published by David Nutt in the Strand, London.

When I was a little girl, my bedroom walls were papered with pink ballerinas. Later on, I chose orange as my favorite color and the ballerinas disappeared! When we found these vintage dancers, I was absolutely enthralled - it brought back so many memories! AND - these hail from the mid 20th century. The pink plastic is highlighted with hand-applied golden paint for a special look. The highlighting is not consistent from one ballerina to the next, but that makes them even vintage looking! Each dancer measures about 1-1/2 inch high.

Our vintage clicker is made in the tradition of all the wonderful old tin toys. From the early 1960s, this little clicker is now probably considered somewhat politically incorrect. But the noise it makes is just as much fun as when it was made.

It measures 2-3/4 inches high by 1-1/16 inch wide. This little item is old story stock, having been in storage for some time. There are lots of clickers like this around, but this is a tad bit larger than the others we've seen. The item was made with the the tin lithograph process, ensuring fantastically bright colors.

This clicker is in its original packaging - hard to believe for a novelty toy like this one!

Arthur Sullivan (of the famed Gilbert and Sullivan) composed the music for The Lost Chord as he sat at his brother Fred's beside, during his last days. The words were written by Adelaide A. Proctor. Known for its grandeur and eloquence, The Lost Chord is often represented by the young woman playing the the pipe organ with a choir of angels accompanying her.

Saraswati, is usually dressed in white. She is the well-loved Hindu goddess of knowledge, music and all the creative arts. She is also know as the the Vedas' Mother. She is also the goddess of speech. She is beloved especially by women as you holds the female spirit of Brahma and is the goddess of forgiveness and truth.

Saraswati holds a prayer mala and a scroll made of palm leaves (a symbol of knowledge). She usually rides a beautiful bird - most often a swan or peacock while she plays, indicating knowledge. Saraswati usually rides a swan and sometimes a peacock, while playing music on a large stringed instrument called a veena.

Our brass Pendant measures about 1-1/2 inch high by 1/2 inch wide and a bit over 1/4 inch deep. The bail is hidden behind her head. The bottom is flat, so it could be used as a mini statue as well.

Song of Creation by Saint Francis of Assisi

In 1225 the infirm St. Francis was living in a hut in a church garden. As ill as he was, he wrote this poem in which he looks on the face of creation and blesses it in its totality.

The text of his poem in this volume is a translation by Matthew Arnold. The publisher has illuminated each line with paintings. Praised be my Lord for our brother the Wind is accompanied by a Corot painting of trees bent before a gale, and also an illustration by Frank Papé in which a dove is borne joyously upward. In this manner two faces of wind are shown, and the words made more vividly manifest.

In the last year of his life St. Francis, greatly hampered by his illness and progressing blindness, lived in a reed hut in the garden of the church of St. Damian. There he composed this song in which he expressed his kinship with the various aspects of creation. G.K. Chesterton writes of St. Francis:

This is a really neat VariVue Motion Lenticular. This delightful pair of hula girls dances in black and white. It is a mint or near-mint condition vintage late 1950s / early 1960s authentic Vari-Vue of two Hawaiian hula dancers at night under a full moon.

Both dancers sway to the rhythm of the silent music. Uniquely, their entire bodies move back and forth, with arms swinging up and down and back and forth. Hieroglyphical Signatures is a reproduction of a mid-19th century rebus series created by J.T. Hart. The beautiful ribbon-tied portfolio holds six individual sheets containing hundreds of delicate miniature illustrations depicting the names of composers, musicians, vocalists, chorus singers and theatrical performer. All of our Day of the Dead figures are made by traditional artisans and are hand sculpted and painted by traditional Mexican artisans. Each of these Muertas measures about 3 inches high, but the pole may make it larger. As you can see in the illustration, the Muertas are different parts of the dance, and so far, we've not received any that was like another we have! So, please let SilverCrow choose one for you!

Large Day of the Dead Figure - Mariachi

Does someone you know need a special serenade? Then perhaps this large terra cotta mariachi can help! This fellow is made of sturdy terra cotta and is quite the looker!

Just like the rest of our Day of the Dead Figurines, each of these Muertos is hand sculpted and painted by traditional artisans in Mexico.

Each mariachi is different - playing one of several instruments (horn, concertina/accordion, guitar or violín) and the suit and hat colors may vary. The fellows measure from 6 to 8 inches high. We are never quite sure of the color of their gorgeous suits or what instrument each is playing. If you have a preference we will try to honor it, but we just cannot promise that we have that one in stock.

These are lightweight highly embossed silvery Dresdens just waiting for you to trim them - to use in your holiday crafts and other artwork. Long used for embellishing ornaments and glued to other paper scraps and decoupage projects, these wonderful motifs are even more special because they are silvery - the traditional color of many of ornaments of the Victorian period.
