Tinsmithing in Mexico dates back to Spanish colonial days. SilverCrow's nichos are all made in Mexico of tin and have either a burnished, brushed or aged finish. Wooden nichos are also part of the Latin Heritage. Many of the Dia de los Muertos Offrendas (Day of the Dead Altars) include wooden nichos - almost like a diorama of loved ones captured in a special moment - in the kitchen, at the barbershop, at a favorite outdoor area, etc.

Traditionally, nichos are used as shrines for favorite or patron saints or other honored religious figures. Nichos are also typically used to protect special treasures or pictures of loved ones. The niche is a 3-dimensional recessed shadow-box in the center of the nicho, that is protected by a hinged glass door.

Each of SilverCrow's nichos is hand-made with care and awaits your treasures. So, no two of the nichos are alike. Make them even more distinctive by accenting the glass doors with painted motifs or small stickers and adding your treasures and mementos inside.

Crowned Heart Nicho

It is hard to see the detail in the crowing flame atop this nicho as the light and camera were playing tricks with it. When we first saw it, we knew this was one we had to have!

The entire piece measures 7-1/4 inches high by 3-5/8 inches wide. The niche measures 3 inches high by 2 inches wide and it is about 5/8 inch deep. The glass front is surrounded by a frame of little scallops and dots, adding to its uniqueness. The niche opens from the front and closes with the traditional coiled metal.

Sun or sunflower Nicho

Our Sun Nicho has a tiny niche - only 1-5/8 inch high by 1-1/2 inch wide and just 1/2 inch deep. The glass door opens from the front and closes with a traditional looped metal closure.

The entire piece measures 6 inches high by about 6 inches wide. The sun rays are all hand cut, so these measurements are approximate. We're really impressed with the cutting as we're not so good at cutting paper - let alone tin. The aged coppery color finish is a bit shinier than usual and we think it works nicely with such a heavenly image as the sun.

Truth be told, some of us thought this was a flower, not the sun, so perhaps it is a sunflower. In any case the cheerful tone of the piece makes it a lovely gift for someone. Why not add some mementos or a special photo?

Large Antiguo Rustico Nicho

Although the smaller and mini nichos are wonderful for almost any project, sometimes a larger nicho is necessary - particularly when making a memorial ofrenda or shrine.

This antiqued tin nicho might be just perfect for those projects. It measures approximately 10-1/2 inches wide by 11-1/4 inches high. The niche measures 7-1/2 inches wide by 5-5/8 inches wide. It is nice and deep at 1-1/2 inches, so you might even add a statue or other larger mementos. The niche opens from the back.

The metal work on this nicho is superb. There are lots of little details that you might not even notice right away. Many of the pieces have depth, making this an extraordinary piece.

Sweet Bird Oval Nicho

More Birds of All Kinds

How could we not fall in love with this beautiful nicho? Two crossed feathers at the bottom of the oval seem to protect the contents inside. Atop the oval is a flying bird, which is made of several pieces, giving it a unique sense of depth.

As with all of SilverCrow's nichos, our Sweet Bird Nicho is made in Mexico by traditional tin artisans. The detail is amazing and the workmanship is exceptional.

The entire piece measures 7-3/8 inches high by about 5-3/4 inches wide. The niche itself is really a rectangle with an oval glass front. The niche opens from the back with a spiral clasp - a bit different from some of our other clasps. The niche measures 3-1/4 inches high by 2-1/2 inches wide and not quite 7/8 inch deep. The oval is 2-7/8 inches high by almost 2 inches wide.

Extra Large Bird Shrine Nicho With 3 Glass Panels

Of course we love the many bird nichos - and this is no exception. The entire piece measures 12 inches high by 8-1/2 inches wide and about 3-1/4 inches deep.

The best part about this wonderful piece is the niche. The front is made of 3 panels of glass. The two side panels are stationery and the center one opens with a slide latch that can barely be seen. The niche's depth is both in front of the metal sides and in back. This allows for a very complex display inside if you choose, or, of course a simple one. The niche is 5-1/2 inches wide by just over 6-1/2 inches high. The door panel is 3-3/8 inches wide and the two side glass panels slant from the door to the side metal.

This wonderful nicho stands nicely on its own and it features a sturdy self loop in back for hanging.

At the top, there are elegantly hand-cut birds, facing the center as though they are protecting the contents of the niche. This design is based on a vintage nicho originally made in the 1800s. The metal work includes eternal circles, diamonds, scallops, flowers and images of the copal.

The stunning craftsmanship is detailed and differs slightly among the pieces, as each is hand made. Allow for variation, but rest assured each is as special as the next.

As with all of SilverCrow's nichos, our Hand Nicho is made in Mexico by traditional tin artisans. The detail is amazing and the workmanship is exceptional. Tiny Concha Topped Shrine Nicho

Sometimes the larger nichos are just too big - especially if you want to add to an assemblage or other mixed-media artwork. This traditional style features a concha style-top that is reminiscent of clouds. It is a great size for a dollhouse as well.

This little concha topped nicho can also be used as a little frame. The glass window will hold a picture about 7/8 inch wide by about 1-1/16 inch Tall. But, with some patience, other mementos can be added in the slot, similar to a standard-sized nicho.

You can paint, decorate or collage the frame/nicho, but it is quite elegant all on it's own. There is a antiqued copper patina that has been lightly lacquered for effect. The opening is in the back - just flip up the little metal closure. There is even a self-hanger loop on the back, so that you can use it a pendant or in a doll house, if you like. You might also consider trimming the flower petals for a different look.

Featuring a lovely print of the Blessed Mother holding the Christ Child, our unique blue nicho has been hand embellished for a very special shrine.

The cross and has been hand cut and embossed with additional ornamentation soldered. A self hook on back makes it easy for you to hand this lovely piece, but it also stands nicely on its own.

The glass door closes with a traditional sliding latch on the side as you view the picture. The picture may be removed if you choose to add your own. The deep niche offers a shadowbox effect that will allow you to add some of your own offerings to the piece.

Large Hand-Painted Purple Shrine-Style Nicho

Storing and displaying your mementos, precious slips of paper and tin photos in a box has transitioned into art - especially when you display your life souvenirs in such a deftly created folk-art nicho such as this.

The detail inside the niche door is absolutely striking, with tiny scallops around the glass perimeter painted in a dark forest green, made from actual metal attached to the base of the nicho right inside of the door.

How wonderfully this styling will highlight the contents of the niche. The nicho door swings out easily for you to add your memories, a Santo and prayers. The glass door closes with the traditional spiral.

The royal purple paint is a surprise. The color of a ripe eggplant, it offers an unexpected earthy tone. The detail work highlights the hand embossed and cut metalwork nicely. There is a shabby-chic look to this style, but we think it truly accents the piece, making it look much older than it is.

The entire piece measures 11-1/2 inches high by 6-1/4 inches wide. The niche is 3/4 inch deep and measures approximately 6 by 3 inches. The oval cutwork inside the glass creates a viewing area of 3-3/4 by 5-1/2. The niche's scallops will cast a lovely shadow on the contents and, with careful arrangement, even slightly hide something if you wish.

The cross on top might be removed if you cut it (be careful and use tin snips). It is slightly askew on each one of those we received. At first we were disappointed, but now we think them perfect for their primitive look.

Of course, because these are handmade, each will vary slightly from the illustration, but not by very much at all.

At first we thought every nicho should have glass doors. But, more and more, we're drawn to the open ones. They look almost vintage. This one is fantastic for a message project or for a family. The entire piece measures 10-1/4 inches wide by 4-3/4 inches high. Each niche is 1-1/2 inch wide by 2-1/2 inches high and about 5/8 inch deep. At the top of each window is a small hand-cut scallop concha. The conchas are cut from the frontispiece - not added as separate pieces.

The antiqued tin styling creates a rustic feel that will be lovely in any décor.

Large Handmade Colonial Wooden Nicho in Green & Purple

It is hard to describe this wonderful Mexican Colonial Style Nicho or Frames as anything other than stunning. It is simply made of rough wood in the colonial Mexican style. Atop each one is a concha that has been accented with traditional Mexican folk-art painting to highlight the expertly cut shape.

The frame is hand-crafted by Mexican Artisans in the tradition of the ages old craft of woodworking and hand painting. Each of these wonderful frames or nichos are created from native wood then hand painted. No two are alike although the colors and the folk-art painting are similar. Yours will be unique in that it is a fine piece of craftsmanship and painting. The colors are deep earth tones - an eggplant purple and deep green accented with golden and darkened eggshell painting (typical to the colonial style).

Our wooden nicho measures 15 inches high (including the decorative concha at the top) and 8 inches wide. The recessed niche can hold a small Santo or saint statue, a photograph or portrait of a loved one, or can house your mementos and special keepsakes. You might also consider adding a mirror inside as a backing.

The inside niche measures 11 inches high by about 5-1/2 inches wide and is 2 inches deep allowing room to create a diorama if you like. The inner niche remains open, allowing you to change your display easily. This is the traditional colonial style.

We have only a few in this color group and each is different, making yours unique. The colors are all similar and compliment each other. These are truly a special find and we are no longer able to acquire these.

Nicho with Wings & Evil Eye Protector

Combining symbolism from many cultures, this unusual mini nicho features an evil eye protector on the center top crown as well as leaf-like wings.

The shadow box opens in the front with the traditional curled metal closure. You might add a picture like the one in our sample, but, please don't let the traditional use limit your imagination! Although any ofrenda would be meaningful, this nicho is especially suited for nature-oriented projects.

These vary slightly in size, but most are 6-1/2 inches wide by 5-1/2 inches high. The niche is 2-1/2 inches wide by 3-1/2 inches long and 3/4 inch deep.

Icon-Style Dimensional Hand Painted Our Lady of Guadalupe Retablo in Red

Created in the style of a Byzantine icon, with a printed or painted image surrounded by repoussée, this special retablo features a holy-card close-up Our Lady of Guadalupe. The dimension was created by the artist with a mixture of paint and plaster and artfully surrounds the elegant Mother of Jesus as she prays for the Americas.

Each of these is handmade of rough recycled wood - Mexican rejas (fruit crates) and then hand painted. The artist has added a milagro on either side of the painting and a medal of Our Lady of Guadalupe on the bottom panel. The icon is backed by tape and foil and includes a laminated prayer to Nuestra Virgen de Guadalupe, requesting her intersession for us to her son.

The entire piece measures just about 10-1/2 inches high by 9 inches wide. Each is handmade, so please allow for some variation.

The artist has adapted a traditional mini nicho (about 3-1/2 inches high) to feature Our Lady of Sorrows (Virgen de los Dolores) from a traditional holy card or estampa. Individually painted and lettered, this sweet nicho features a door that opens so that you might add your own offerings - a medal, a treasure, a prayer on parchment - you decide. The base is filled with straw and dried flowers as an offering to Our Lady.

Nicho with Crows Holding a Heart

This charming traditional nicho is very special to us. Although we are not really sure what type of birds they are, we like to think that they are crows or ravens that are perched atop the niche. The two birds are seemingly in flight and are holding tight onto the heart between them.

The shadow box opens from the front with a traditional curled closure. This would be just right as wedding or anniversary present - just add the couple's picture to the inside of the door of the niche. Of course, the niche's depth allows for additional items to be added - perhaps a miniaturized version of their wedding invitation, a small candle or milagros. We also like it for a baptism or other baby memory box as the parents hold their true heart.

Our little star nicho features 6 points that each end with a decorative ball. It's simple lines belie the detail in the handwork on it. The rays emanating from the center actually send focus back to the contents of the niche behind the glass window. The door is latched by the traditional tin spiral. A hanging loop on the back makes this just perfect for hanging on the wall, in a larger wood niche.

Because of the 6 points, it might be just what you need for a Judaic project as it can represent Star of David.

We were extremely taken by the provocative message on this stunning nicho:

INCLUSO LOS ANGELES

TIENEN SU INFIERNO

(Even the Angels Have Their Own Hell)

The interpretations for such a statement visit each end of the spectrum. What makes the angels suffer so? Is there hell on earth, or do the angels understand so much better what heaven is for having seen hell? Interpret as you will, the message is certainly thought provoking at the very least. Perhaps it is a reminder to assess our own goodness and evil.

The nicho itself is hand made tin, and then it is hand painted with brightly-colored details by traditional artists at the famed Cielito Lindo Studios in México. Once you open the glass covered niche, you can add your own philosophical pieces should you so choose. You'll find a hand-painted glass stone featuring the fires of hell covering an image of Anima Sola.

If you just want to frame a meaningful quotation, or the picture of your beloved, you might not want to use a traditional nicho. Because this lovely tin piece features a shallow area for your additions, this might be just the perfect nicho frame for you. The glove shape represents protection and concern - as though you are holding your memory in your hand. And the heart window expresses the love with which you treasure what is inside.

A self-loop on the back will help hang this lovely frame on your wall or you might even choose to add it to a larger shrine. The tinwork is very lovely and deeply embossed for a special look. It measures approximately 6-1/2 inches from wrist to tip of finger and about 3 inches wide at the widest point (from the thumb). The heart window is made of glass and is firmly attached to the tin. This gorgeous nicho has been created by the famed Estudio Cielito Lindo in Mexico. It is loaded with detail and ready for you to place in a sacred space of your own. Or, you might choose to embellish it a bit yourself before placing it.

Studded with milagros (which may vary from the picture), each of these features a portrait of Our Lady of Guadalupe honored by an altar inside the niche. You can remove the picture or cover it with one of your own if you so choose. There is also room inside the niche to add some mementos and holy pieces of your own. The niche measures 6 inches high by 3-1/3 inches wide and about 3/4 inch deep. The niche door is glass and closes traditionally.

This traditional nicho is really more like a little frame. The glass window is rectangular and holds a picture about 7/8 inch wide by about 3/4 inch high. But, with some patience, other mementos can be added in the slot, similar to a standard-sized nicho.

You can paint, decorate or collage the frame/nicho, but it is quite elegant all on it's own. There is a antiqued copper patina that has been lightly lacquered for effect. The opening is in the back - just flip up the little metal closure. There is even a self-hanger loop on the back, so that you can adapt it easily for a pendant, if you like.

This lovely piece is made of Alpaca silver (also known as German silver). It is an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc (and contains little or no true silver). Nicho Shrine with Birds

Just like our Bird Heart Nicho, this traditional nicho is very special to us. Although we are not really sure what type of birds they are, we like to think that they are crows or ravens that are perched on either side of the traditional shrine window, which opens from the front.

Although there is a cross at the top, a pair of tin snips or hefty scissors will cut it off to remove the religious aspect of this little shrine.

This nicho measures 7-3/4 from bird from bird. From the top to the bottom it measures 7 inches. The niche is 3-1/2 inches high by 2-1/2 inches. It is about 3/4 inch deep

This simple nicho has been made in the likeness of the man in the moon. Facing either direction (we cannot be sure which ones we will receive in an order), it is fashioned in the liso style - simple and smooth, allowing you to add your own decoration or leave it simply as is for a dramatic appearance.

The shadow box, or niche, opens in the front with the traditional curled metal closure. You might add a picture or some mementos. But, please don't let the traditional use limit your imagination! Although any ofrenda would be meaningful, this nicho is especially suited for romance as the moon represents the night or evening.

This gorgeous Nicho Cabinet was made in the Philippines but features the design of Latino artist Charlie Carrillo. Drawing on his rich Hispanic heritage combined with the Spanish Colonial cultural influence in New Mexico, artist, teacher and scholar Charlie Carrillo celebrates the santero tradition through his devotional creations such as this wonderful piece.

From his studio in Santa Fe, Charlie uses traditional art techniques such as sculpting wood and grinding his own pigments for his creations. He is a 2006 recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts, National Heritage Fellowship Award which honors American Folk artists for their contributions to our national cultural history.

We are showing this nicho with two of our Santos (St Francis of Assisi and Our Lady of Guadalupe). The piece is painted in the primitive style to look as though it has been around for hundreds of years but yet is still modern enough to fit in today's décor.

Made completely of wood and hand painted by artisans in the Philippines, after the original design of the artist, the nicho measures 18 inches high (including the concha) by 11-1/2 inches wide by 7-1/2 inches deep. The arched niche is 12-1/2 inches high by 8-1/4 inches wide and 7 inches deep.

The entire piece is painted and the sides, top and front are decorated by hand. The background of the niche features a blue sky and stars.

This piece has been produced by Midwest of Canon Falls in celebration of American Artists.

This classic nicho measures 10-3/4 inches high by 5-3/4 inches wide. There is a very large niche (6 by 4 inches by 1 inch deep), so there are plenty of possibilities for this piece.

The the elegant top is highlighted with a fleur-di-lis style embellishment. Under that is a pyramid centered with an evil eye. The tooling is very richly done in a traditional pattern.

The glass niche door closes with the traditional spiral slide fashioned of tin. Finished in a fine antique coppery patina, this nicho is just stunning.

Retablo Cross of Lamentation

After Christ's death on the cross, the cross itself came to be venerated as one of the most important Christian symbols. Alejandro Chávez shows an empty cross, graced with a portrait of Jesus. Ladders reach to beams where ofrendas (offerings) have been placed. Figures in traditional Andean dress kneel below the cross, their eyes lifted in devout prayer.

Known as a retablo, this traditional diorama is housed in a colorful chest crafted of wood and painted. Chávez carefully models each figure from ceramic plaster and paints them by hand; the retablo receives an antique finish. So, please allow for slight variation.

The Cross of Lamentation resembles the Curanderos Cross so often seen in Mexico.

Flying Corazón nicho

At a bit over 6 inches, the highly detailed Flying Heart Nicho is a masterpiece. It has so very many special attributes including the superbly crafted wings - three on either side and the rounded cross atop the heart accented by the flame behind it.

The niche glass is flush with the front of the heart - quite different than the usual doors that open from the front. The door is actually the sold back of the heart. The latch is an especially strong wire that slips through two loops.

This is a larger version of our flower nicho. Delicate flowers adorn the niche of this nicho and the top is quite traditional. There is quite a bit of work in cutting and forming this particular little tin windowed shadowbox!

Each measures about 7 inches high, but there is some variation. The decoration on each is slightly different as well as every one is hand made and decorated. The niche is about 1/2 inch deep and the glass window door closes with the traditional rolled tin.

This wonderful nicho houses the brave and the beautiful (a strong man, represented with a knife and his love, a beautiful woman). The figures inside the nicho are hand-sculpted and painted. The nicho itself is hand made tin, and then it is hand painted with brightly-colored details.

The words at the top vary (either El Valiente y La Dama or El Valiente y La Catrina). There are some other variations as well, each is more interesting than the next! It measures about 8 inches wide by 8 inches tall.

Smooth Liso Arch Nicho

There are just so many possibilities with this elegant and simple Liso Arch Nicho! The smoothness and and classic arched design will allow it to enter any décor easily, for those who might not like the classical Spanish designs. But, it fits easily into any Southwest or Mexican décor as well.

We have seen nichos like this actually set in to the wall of a home - the wall having been hollowed to hold it. How gorgeous!

The antiqued tin allows you to use it as is or to paint it if you choose. The entire piece measures 6 inches high by 3-1/4 inches wide. The niche is rounded at the same degree as the entire piece and it measures 4-3/4 inches high by 2 inches wide. The niche is 3/4 inch deep. It opens from the front an closes with the traditional rolled metal clasp.

This is perfect for adding a Santo or other statue or a piece of your own sculpted artwork.
